Blog Entry 15 of 21 BeccaBlog
Hi everyone, I'm glad you found your way to the blog section. I've been asked, "What's a blog?" more than a few times since starting to talk to people about YourHub.com. Blog is simply short for Web log and you can think of it as an online journal where you can wax philosphic on subjects large or small, international or personal. Just remember if you choose to add the blog to the YourHub listings, anyone can read what you write. My blog, most likely, will just be about random thoughts and observations and hopefully will spur conversation either on local topics or local effects of wider-reaching topics. Please feel free to leave comments with your own views -- or better yet, start your own blog and write about it!

All the news that's unfit to print
Contributed by: YourHub.com   on 4/18/2007

Oh, ouch, my eyes. I think they'll be alright; I've just been rolling them too hard at all the non news dominating the air waves, paper and Internet last week.
I guess that's what happens when all the news that's fit to print isn't because it's been replaced by speculation about "baby daddy drama" and name calling.
You wouldn't know, from last week's headlines, that the war continues in Iraq with more civilian bombings, there are problems afoot at the World Bank, or what's going on in Darfur (what is going on in Darfur?).
I suppose these stories just aren't as sexy or entertaining as the others. If they were, millions of us wouldn't have been on the edges of our seats awaiting the results of Anna Nicole Smith's baby's DNA tests to see whether the photographer guy or the lawyer guy would get the money ...errrr custody of her child.
And we wouldn't have had over-the-top coverage of radio personality Don Imus' infamous remarks about the Rutger's women's basketball team.
I'm not saying there aren't human interest elements to either of these stories.
What Imus said was absolutely insensitive and rude. And I suppose the onslaught of media coverage launched some useful discussion about what's appropriate and what's not and what the price for these kind of verbal assaults should be. It's even fun to debate whether he deserved to lose his job over the whole thing. But how much coverage does a cruel slip of the tongue deserve?
And what of baby Dannielyn? Yes, one view is it's a sad story about a poor motherless baby. But somehow that side of things gets lost in the coverage. Instead, fascinated, we giggled when even Zsa Zsa's husband stepped forward, throwing himself into the pool of the "I slept with Anna" sweepstakes contenders.
But is this really news though? Is your world affected by it? Does it enrich your soul knowing any of that? Maybe I'm taking my profession too seriously. Maybe that's not the purpose of the news at all. But then, what is?
What do you expect from the various media outlets? Do you have the same expectations of an online news source as broadcast news? And what about your local news station or paper? What should they be covering?
Finally -and I'm sure you knew this was coming- what would you like to see more of in YourHub.com? Ok, so it's a trick question of sorts. While I am curious about what your favcorite types of stories are, rather than writing and telling me (though I'm always happy to get e-mail), why not try going online and posting an article, blog or opinion piece about whatever interests you?
YourHub.com works as simply as that. Nearly all of what you see here was written and posted by folks like you. If you have a pet project, organization, school or church, why not let us know what's going on there? If you have an opinion about something, share it. And we always love cute kid and pet pictures. Ok, now you're rolling your eyes ...but it's true!
