Blog Entry 54 of 69 If you think it's news, it is.
Notes, observations, commentary, news and photos from our communities. I'm the general manager for the YourHub.com operation, the citizen journalism site for the Ventura County Star. And I'm glad you are here, too. My wife Joanna and I live in Simi Valley with our two sons, Matt and Joey. We've been in Ventura County for more than two decades and feel privileged to be here. Please comment on this blog and post your news and musings, too. See you around the county!

The sounds of citizen journalism
Contributed by: Michael Hoffman   on 6/6/2007

If YourHub.com could handle sound clips, Marty Albert of Thousand Oaks knows what he would do.

He would sing in one of many languages and post his melody on this community website.

To make his point Tuesday night, Albert burst into several lines of an Italian song at the end of the most recent YourHub.com 101 seminar. At his conclusion, the 20 people who had gathered for the Thousand Oaks session applauded.

Earlier in the evening, Albert had asked whether the site could handle sound clips. Promotions manager Angela Fentiman later asked him for the impromptu performance.

We can't yet host audio and video clips on YourHub.com. But we are working on it. We have heard from our users that they want to post a full range of material, not merely text and photographs. We want to give them that option.

In the meantime, interest continues to broaden among individuals and organizations who want to use these citizen journalism websites. You can see that diversity reflected in those attending the orientation seminars.

At Conejo Valley meeting, Nancy McChesney promised to post information about Animal Rescue Volunteers, the volunteer group she works with.

Look for a piece from Sandy Emberland promoting the upcoming pancake breakfast hosed by the Democratic Club of the Conejo Valley.

Penny Strowger plans to pen a notice about a June 30 health care event in Thousand Oaks, part of the organization Health Care for All-California/One Care Now.

Each of these people spent about 90 minutes hearing about how to use this emerging citizen journalism resource. This website is a place for you to post your news, photos, thoughts and opinions. At one of our seminars, you will learn about this new type of community-driven information, meet some of your involved neighbors and get some tips on writing and photography.

Our next seminar will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the Oak View Park and Resource Center in Oak View. The address is 555 Mahoney Ave., Oak View. You can RSVP at 805-437-0447 or afentiman@VenturaCountyStar.com.

We plan more meetings throughout Ventura County as the year continues. Watch these pages for the times and places.

If you come to one of our gatherings, I can't promise you a serenade like the one we had from Albert. But I can guarantee that you will leave with a better understanding of how to make a greater impact on your community.

Yourhub.com is coming along. From my point of view it should be more about people than services, but I enjoy reading and writing.
