The back to school season has been particularly joyous and successful for Assistance League of Conejo Valley. In a series of shopping nights at local Target stores, the group was able to provide new school clothing and shoes to 1,160 elementary school children in need. For many of these children, this was the first time they had ever had new clothing and they were thrilled to be able to pick out their own school wardrobes. Assistance League volunteers, dressed in their red aprons, helped children and their families make their selections, stay within the limit of their shopping vouchers and get through checkout with all their purchases. The volunteers, the children and the Target staff all felt the excitement of the shopping nights.
Assistance League of Conejo Valley is a chapter of the national philanthropic corporation National Assistance League® with 117 chapters and guilds all over the United States. The signature program for Assistance League is Operation School Bell®, a program that provides elementary school children in need with new school clothing and shoes. Assistance League believes in the positive impact of suitable clothing on a child's attendance, self-esteem and performance records. The program also relieves parents of an often unaffordable expense
Over 1,700 elementary school children in the Conejo Valley have been identified as children in need. As Assistance League's funding efforts increase, so too does the number of children it can provide for. This year the group was able to provide new school clothing to 1160 elementary school children, but Assistance League has bigger plans. The dream is to provide this service not just for all elementary students in need but also for middle school children.
During September and October, Assistance League sponsored nine shopping events at various Target stores in the Conejo Valley, Moorpark and Simi Valley. Children arrived at the appointed Target at a pre-set time and were given pink wrist bands entitling them to a $100 voucher. With their parents they selected their own school clothes and shoes. One grateful father told volunteers that he couldn't believe that anyone would do something so wonderful for his family.
