StoryFest to Promote Early Literacy
Contributed by: Kay Giles on 10/10/2007

Join us on November 3rd for Young Readers' StoryFest, a FREE event for young children and their families featuring eight children's authors and many special guests, presented by the Ventura Neighborhood for Learning (VNfL) program. Ventura Education Partnership, the non-profit foundation that supports the VenturaUnifiedSchool District, is partnering with Adventures for Kids bookstore to present this literacy event, a benefit for the VNfL program, funded by First 5 Ventura County to provide early education, family strengthening, and access to health services for children ages 0-5. The Young Readers' StoryFest will take place on Saturday, November 3, from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m, at the school district's EducationServiceCenter, located at 255 W. Stanley Avenue in Ventura.

Children's authors Joan Graham, Mary Hanson, Carol Heyer, Barbara Jean Hicks, Sherry Shahan, June Sobel, Simms Taback, and Greg Trine will join other special guests for a special story-time in six tents: Pets and Animals, Health and Recreation, Food and Gardening, Science and the Environment, Art and Music, and Families and Home. Children who stamp their StoryFest passport by visiting all of our story tents will receive a special prize and will be entered into a drawing to win free books! Thank you to our sponsors for supporting this important event: County Schools Federal Credit Union, Oxnard Children's Dental Group, Better Kitchens and Baths, Santa Clara Valley Veterinary Clinic, True North Fitness & Health, West Coast Environmental and Engineering, Island Packers Cruises, and RinconGardens.

In addition to being a wonderful day of storytelling and other fun activities for children, the event will be an opportunity to showcase the Ventura Neighborhood for Learning program and the services that it provides for families with young children. Child development and early learning opportunities, as well as family support services and access to health and mental health services, are provided through the VNfLFamilyResourceCenters and service sites located at Sheridan Way, Will Rogers, EP Foster, and Saticoy elementary schools.
