Local Artist Weaves Banners for St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church

The installation of six large handwoven banners by artist Deborah Jarchow, celebrating "Ordinary Time," was completed on Monday, June 13, 2007, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camarillo, CA. The banners, hung behind the altar, range in height from 7' to 15' and each is 27" wide. (An additional smaller piece is installed at the ambo where the scriptures are proclaimed.) The colorful design is in shades of green, which is the designated color for the liturgical season, and includes threads in shades of gold to highlight and focus attention towards the crucifix and altar. St. Mary Magdalen Church is located on the corner of Los Posas Road and Crestview Avenue and is generally open during the day.

The project was conceived when Carol Browning, Director of Liturgy & Music for the church, and Lori Moshy, Head Sacristan, spoke with church member and artist Maggie Kildee about using banners to brighten the church interior, specifically the large brown walls behind the altar. Maggie, who is one of the founders of Studio Channel Islands Art Center, suggested they look at some large sculptural weavings previously done by Deborah Jarchow. In early March, these four women got together with Carole Minkin, Liturgical Environment Coordinator, and discussed the possibilities for the project. Later, they met with Deborah at the church to talk about colors and concepts and the project got underway. Deborah presented samples to the group in late April, received approval and began weaving in earnest. The banners were completed in early June and installed in time for a special Deacons' Mass of Thanksgiving celebration on June 17th.

A full-time artist and weaver, Deborah is a resident of Simi Valley, but works from her studio in Camarillo. When she discovered weaving in 1996, her life-long love of fiber, texture, and color came together. Prior to 2005, Deborah devoted her talents to creating wearable art, weaving hundreds of garments and accessories for sale and exhibition across the country. Since then, she has increased the scope of her work to include non-functional art such as these large-scale wall pieces. Her work has appeared in many national and international exhibits, winning numerous awards, and she has written articles for Handwoven Magazine. For the past three years, she has been an Artist-in-Residence, a teacher, and weaver at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, CA. Deborah was instrumental in developing the Fiber Art Studio at the center where workshops in weaving and other fiber arts are offered.
