Radio Listeners Get ‘Dis-Connected’
Contributed by: Lisa Osborne on 11/12/2007

With Ventura's 'soft talk' radio station, AM 1590 "The Connection," switching to Spanish talk, some Ventura radio listeners will have to find another favorite station. Although some of the talk shows that were heard on AM 1590 are moving down the dial to sister station, News-Talk AM 1520 KVTA, for many listeners it just won't be the same.

Whenever a radio station changes formats, listeners suffer. A favorite radio station is like an old friend, always there when you need them. In February 2005, when KKZZ switched to the so-called 'female friendly' talk radio format after years of playing easy listening music, it was a shock to a lot of people, many of them soft-hearted souls who loved the music, which brought back memories of 'the good old days.'

At the time, I was the morning show host and program director of KKZZ, so I heard from well over 100 people who called to express their anger at the change. KKZZ had been a long time friend to them, which they counted on for gentle companionship. As a listener once told me, "When I wake up in the middle of the night, I turn on KKZZ, hear that good old music and know that all is well in the world."

That's the kind of bond that's formed between radio listeners and their favorite station. It's like having a friend they can always count on.

And while you could curse KKZZ's parent company, Gold Coast Broadcasting, for taking your favorite station away, they should also be applauded for giving the fledgling talk format a try in the first place. When 'The Connection' launched 21 months ago, it became one of the first stations in the US to air the so-called 'female-friendly' talk radio format. And, while it never drew a big listening audience, it did give a voice to women on the radio. And, with the Maria Sanchez Show moving to afternoons on AM 1520, at least her sound will soften up the endless stream of syndicated male political talk radio hosts airing their rants daily on KVTA.
