Not long ago I was looking through the AAA automobile guide book. I noticed that every little town and hamlet has a historic landmark of some sort. These locations were marked with a bronze plaque and entered into the list of historic spots in California. I found that Oak View wasn't on the list. It should be. Enough has happened in the area that is historic. In fact two landmarks stand in Oak View that could be placed on the state register of historic places. They are the Historic Arnez Adobe on Old Creek Road and the old Arnez Apple Cider place on highway 33. The apple stand is, sadly, now closed but its place in county history if firmly established. Once it was a barn where stagecoaches going to Ojai would stop and change teams for the clime up the grade into the Ojai Valley. It was called the "Halfway House" because it was about half way to Ojai. One or both of these sites should be submitted as historic sites. Maybe the old cider stand could be re-opened and turned into sort of a museum on the Ventura River Valley and Oak View. Then the community could be recognized and become a destination for the historically minded.
