Answer: about 2 million people, that's who! Approximately that many homes were built with aluminum wiring between 1965 and 1973. The reason aluminum wiring is not currently used in homes is the tendency of aluminum wiring to easily over heat. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that homes wired with aluminum wire are
55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach Fire Hazard Conditions!
If you have aluminum wiring, you have three options:
1.
Ignore it
. The problem is that you have 40 year-old wire that was highly suspect within a few years of the original installation.
2.
Complete Replacement
with copper wire. Very thorough but very messy: holes in walls and significant mess. If you have an empty house, it may be an alternative, but your price (electrical, drywall patch, paint) will be in the neighborhood of $15 to $30 thousand dollars. Not a great neighborhood.
3.
COPALUM
. This is the only CPSC approved repair. It does not involve wholesale replacement, but adding copper wiring to the system where it attaches to plugs and switches. It involves a UL approved, one-of-a-kind process. It is also the only repair solely recommended by several local building departments.
Believe it or not, as an electrical contractor, I actually purchased a home with aluminum wiring. I had several problems with flickering lights. I had the COPALUM process applied. The whole house was done within three days, no mess and no more flickering. It works!
