The Monday Star article about the struggles of contractors and the construction industry was informative,
but not accurate. If I didn't live here and know differently, I'd expect a flock of contractors fighting for a spot on the ledge of the Dean Witter building to jump.
The reality is, that the staggering majority of mortgages are
not in foreclosure. More to the point, there are plenty of contractors who are staying busy and doing well, by doing the basics, better and with more creativity. By basics, I mean great service, communication and creativity. The stuff that survives down turns. The abject misery of the article, implying that contractors can only survive by severely cutting their prices, was also dramatic, but very myopic.
I personally know several contractors who are adapting and are doing the basics, with great success. Why not write about them? Let's give the "sky-is-falling" blitz a rest. Let me know. I think the public should know that all is not misery, gloom and certain ruin for contractors. These companies are not fighting the economy, but the public's acceptance of the media's picture of doom.
Thanks!
