Dave Amezcua is a 24-year-old musician from Los Angeles, California.Amezcua grew up with little money and a family that was unsupportive of his dream to become a musician. All Amezcua had was determination, a positive attitude and the will to succeed and follow his dream.
Amezcua's family could not afford guitar lessons when he was a boy.The family was too large and the income was too low to afford the luxuries of a guitar.Amezcua had three older sisters.Amezcua's father Thomas was a middle school teacher who didn't bring in much money.
"I wasn't financially stable," said Thomas."We didn't make much money and living was expensive, we couldn't afford to buy Dave silly instruments."
Amezcua was not discouraged by his father's lack of money, he knew what he wanted and made it work.Amezcua was always a hard worker and found a way to make enough money to buy his first instrument.
"When I was seven I had to mow lawns and save my lunch money to buy my first guitar," said Amezcua."My parents didn't have the money to buy me an instrument or lessons. Not that they would have anyway."
Amezcua is a constructive, passionate person who uses his way with words as well as his kind nature to create reality from his life long dream of becoming a musician and being part of a successful rock band.
Amezcua taught himself how to play guitar and that was the tool he needed to build the foundation for the rest of his life.
"I played guitar every free moment I had," said Amezcua."When I wasn't playing I was memorizing and learning new music I had taken from the school band room."
Amezcua told me he always knew he wanted to play music. He said he could just feel it deep down even when he was very young. He said it was difficult growing up without the means to own great instruments or have supportive parents but he made it work with determination.
Amezcua's father Thomas said it wasn't that he didn't want his son to be a musician; he knew the hardships and trouble musicians could get into.
"Dave always thought we hated the idea that he wanted to be a musician," said Thomas."I felt bad about not being able to support him with his dream, and I thought he might join the wrong crowd or lose control of the important things in life."
Fortunately, Amezcua stayed focused on his goals and never changed his mind or got distracted form his life as a musician.
"Music is my life," said Amezcua."I could not imagine doing anything else."
When Amezcua was 18 years old he auditioned for bass guitarist with a local band he saw in the newspaper.Days went by and Amezcua heard nothing from the band. Finally he received a call from the band. He was in.The band was called
The Grey.
"We were awful," laughed Amezcua."I thought it was the coolest thing in the world though."
Amezcua was part of
The Grey until he was 20 years old.He eventually out grew them and with the little money he made from shows and odd jobs bought himself a set of drums, a new bass guitar, and some speakers.Amezcua was determined to learn how to play drums as well.He thought he should be able to move around from different instruments if he was ever asked to play something else.
Amezcua finally moved out of his parent's house in Los Feliz. He got away from his sisters and his parents and the stuffiness of living at home.He rented a great little place in Santa Monica.
"I rented a room from an old hippie who owned an run down house in Santa Monica, moved my stuff in the garage and practiced music until I fell off the chair," said Amezcua.
He rented a room from Bob Witmaker, who was a 60-year-old hippie.Bob was a musician as well.Amezcua and Witmaker got along great because Witmaker didn't mind the noise and helped Amezcua with new cord progressions and was an overall good friend.Amezcua worked as a painter, a server and even a guitar tech for a small time band before something incredible finally happened.
It was at the age of 23 when Dave's life changed in a serious way.He received a call from an old friend who he hadn't spoken to for many years.Aaron Bruno, the singer of the band Under the Influence of Giants
said they were in desperate need of a bassist for their upcoming show in San Francisco.Without hesitation, Amezcua said, "of course" and went to San Francisco.
"I left in such a whirlwind of excitement I almost forgot my guitar," said Amezcua.
Amezcua fell in love with their music. He said the energy and focus was incredible. He was speechless when they asked him to be part of their band.
Bruno, the singer of Under the Influence of Giants had nothing but positive feedback for Amezcua.
"Dave has done a great job meshing with our style and strict practicing regime," said Aaron."He is a hard worker and really adds a great new dimension to the band."
Brenda Singer, Amezcua's ex-girlfriend spoke about Amezcua's habit of putting work before relationships.
"Dave was always so focused on work that he never spent time or anything on me," said Singer."I knew he loved me but he loved his music more.I remember when he forgot about my birthday when he was on tour, I hated his lack of commitment to me."
Amezcua never had a commitment problem with his true love, music.Amezcua had a clear goal and focused to reach it.He encountered hardships along the way but he never lost sight of what he loved most.
"I always knew I wanted to be part of an amazing band and tour the world," said Amezcua. "It took me 23 years, but her I am, living and doing what I love,"
