Ventura Tennis Club's Successful Retro Tournament
Contributed by: Kent Bodin on 5/25/2007

On Saturday May 19th, the community based Ventura TennisClub held its annual Retro (wood racket) Tennis Tournament.

Many players dressed in the style of the fifties and sixties, wearing all white clothing while using the older smallerhead wood tenins rackets of that era.
The singles and doubles events were held at Camino Real Park, Ventura. Old school Rock N'Roll music played alongside the public courts. Play was spirited, even asthe youngerplayers adjustedto those old heavy rackets with their small difficult -to-find sweet spots. How did Borg and McEnroe play so well with those rackets?

No trophies were awarded, but eachplayer received a tie-dyed sixties style T-shirt and a commemorative CD of the same music heard during play.

Our appreciation goesout toDave Dyke, who suppliedmany of the wood rackets fromhispersonal collection, ChelseaHoerer for her programming of the music, and to her father, Andy Hoerer, fororganizingthe successful event.

The Ventura Tennis Club is located at Camino Real Park at the corner of Dean Drive and Varsity Street. There are eight hard courts, all lit for night play. Individual or family membershipscost $30 per year, with no additional monthly dues required. For more information on joining the club, go to www.venturatennisclub.com.
