When Mrs. Mehle's Community Service class at College Heights Christian School decided to collect blankets for the needy, they figured they needed a few containers to collect the blankets in, but they were starting the semester with no money to work with. After kicking around several ideas for raising money, the 9 middle schoolers came up with the idea of "Penny Wars". they place plastic bottles outside the door of each of the 10 classrooms. Each day for 8 days, students came to school lugging bags and boxes of pennies. And for every penny in the bottle, the class received one point. But they weren't just bringing pennies. Students could visit other classroom doors and sabotage their neighbors by placing "silver" money in the bottle. The competition would lose points when silver was found in their bottle! The winning class was to receive an ice cream party, but the real motivation was the joy that these kids feel when they have the opportunity to make a difference in the community. When the Penny War was over, over $1600 in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters had been collected! It took over an hour for the coin counter at the bank to process all that change! Now the class has enough money to plan their next community service projects, not to mention purchase seven big beautiful new barrels to collect the blankets that the families of College Heights will be donating to the needy. And this is just the beginning!
