With the Veterans Day holiday still on the horizon, these students were thinking way ahead, working on a project to hopefully brighten local Veterans' Christmases.
On Friday, November 9, dozens of students, teachers and parents from Ojai Christian Academy gathered to assemble Advent Calendars for Veterans. Spending this warm, sunny afternoon indoors, these students adorned over 100 calendars with personal notes, drawings, stickers, Bible verses, and words of encouragement. According to Mrs. Gabriele Becker, the Ojai Christian Academy teacher who organized the project, "It warms my heart to see these students sacrifice some of their free time and energy to do something to bring joy to someone that they don't even know - particularly a someone who's bravely served our country."
Along with the hand-crafted calendars, each Vet will receive 24 days' worth of Christmas candy, and a special gift to be opened on Christmas. Early next month, the students will take a trip to Los Angeles to personally deliver these calendars to Veterans at the Veterans Administration hospital on Wilshire Blvd.
Projects such as this one are encouraged at Ojai Christian Academy, where the motto is "Faith, Knowledge, and Service". Service is a key component of the school's rigorous academic program. These experiences assist each student to become a compassionate, mature Christian and a responsible and productive member of society.
