The Casitas Christmas Tree
Contributed by: Richard Senate on 12/4/2007

One of the enduring traditions of Christmas in Ventura County is that of the Casitas Tree. For decades people have spontaneously put decorations on this tree by the freeway near Casitas Springs. When they first started doing this with their left over Christmas Decorations it was a small tree but, in the years that have passed it has grown. Now some have problems getting the ribbons and ornaments to the top branches. Years ago someone place a large star atop the tree and this decoration lingers on as a memory of Christmas Past.

It is a spontaneous gesture and one that doesn't seek to sell anything or preach a message. It's just a bit of Ventura County whimsy, something to bring a smile to the face and remind one about the true meaning of the season. I hope new ornaments, appear as they always do, one day, almost as if by magic and this tradition continues on like the parade of lights at the harbor or the illuminated pine trees at the Old Mission. It is a unique tradition of our very special place in the Golden State.
