Buena High School Drama Department opened Thursday evening with their fall production of To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. This timeless classic (that most of us have read or will read in 9 th grade) tackles the always difficult issues of racism, prejudice, and stereotypes. The Buena Cast handled these issues with poise and did a superb job in their various roles.

Buena's cast also breaks stereotypical boundaries with at least ¾ of the cast being Varsity athletes. The cast is made up of representatives from boys and girl's basketball, volleyball, track, cross-country, water polo, swimming, and even football.

When I was in high school, way back in the 70's, the kids in Drama, acted in the plays and the athletes played sports. But THANKS to the UC requirement of a fine art class- Drama, athletes and all students that want to go to a state university need to have a fine arts class. This requirement has given athletes the chance to be exposed to and enjoy more then just sports.

Our Kids are incredibly fortunate to be able to live and learn in such an open, accepting environment that offers them the opportunity to participate and learn from all that life and school has to offer. Thank you, Mr. Davis for helping and guiding these multi-talented students to an outstanding performance.
